課程概述

This course is intended for further in-depth study of gastrointestinal physiology. Undergraduate students over forth year, and graduate students in medicine-and biology-related studies are encouraged to take the course. The course content includes lectures and discussions of scientific papers in the field of gastrointestinal physiology.

課程目標
Students will learn advanced knowledge of functions of the gastrointestinal tract include motility, digestion, absorption, secretion and barrier. The autonomic and enteric nervous system innervates the gastrointestinal tract to regulate all aspects of gastrointestinal functions. Since the findings of Bayliss and Starling including the peristaltic reflex and discovery of secretin, the gastrointestine is nowadays regarded not merely as a digestive and absorptive tract but also an immune organ and the second brain. A massive amount of commensal bacteria resides in the gut, which benefits the health of the host through production of short chain fatty acids and Vitamin K. The GI tract plays dual roles, one serving as the first line for nutrient uptake that tolerates dietary proteins, and the other as a defense system against orally acquired pathogens. The mucosal barriers are important to confine and shape the commensal microbiota, and to recognize and eliminate pathogenic microbes. The turnover rate of intestinal epithelial cells along the crypt/villus axis that involves processes of proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis and shedding is crucial for maintenance of gut homeostasis. Imbalances between cell proliferation and cell death, as well as unlimited stemness are characteristics of colorectal cancers. Recent scientific studies suggest dynamic interaction among enteric nervous system, immune system and the gastrointestinal mucosa. The dysfunctional brain-gut axis or microtioba-gut-brain axis, or aberrant immune response toward bacteria underlies the pathogenesis of various gastrointestinal and systemic diseases.

課程要求
Students will be graded by participation in class (10 %), an essay (30 %), and presentations (60 %). Students are asked to present up-to-date original scientific papers on a weekly basis. The text of the review essay should be double-spaced and with a minimum of 10 pages not including figures, tables, references or appendix. Based on the review essay, students should design two short essay questions with answers in the appendix. Additional assignments for PhD students are to find out two to three unanswered questions in the field.
